Breckenridge November 29, 2007

The Lady Cardinals opened their season and conference play with a 57-21 victory over Breckenridge. Seminary used a stifling defense to limit shot opportunities for the Huskies. MLS caused 10 turnovers in the first quarter to help move out to a 14-2 lead and never looked back. The lead was expanded to 32-4 by halftime. The Cardinals controlled all aspects of the game out shooting Breckenridge 43% to 16%, out rebounding them 47-25, and had 17 turnovers to 25. Sem displayed good ball movements as 17 of their 20 baskets resulted from assists. The Lady Cardinals next host defending state champ Novel Catholic Central before heading to Ithaca to resume league play on Friday.

Nouvel December 5, 2007

Final - Nouvel 57, MLS 46

The Lady Cardinals opened their home season with a game against the defending Class C State Champions.  Handling Nouvel's 3/4 court trap would be a key.  MLS showed patience early one in moving the ball  and avoiding turnovers.  However, in the last 2 minutes of the 1st quarter the trap caused turnovers and led to easy Panther baskets.  Nouvel finished the quarter on a 14-2 run to lead 23-11 at the end of the first.  The rest of the game was played even score wise.  Nouvel went on another 6-0 spurt to start the 4th to bump their lead to 16.  Seminary was able to chip away at it, but couldn't seriously threatened them at the end. Even though it was a loss, the lessons learned should be of great value to the team for the rest of the season.

Ithaca December 7, 2007

The Seminary Cardinals traveled to Ithaca in a conference match-up and came away with a victory.  The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 17-10 first quarter lead, but were never able to put the Yellowjackets away.  Ithaca battled back early in the third quarter to actually take a 30-28 lead.  Seminary responded by getting the ball underneath for some post-up baskets to regain their margin, but didn't make the free throws necessary to put the game away until midway through the fourth.  The Cardinals shot 42% from  the floor compared to 30% for Ithaca but had 17 turnovers which led to fewer opportunities.

Millington December 11, 2007

MLS 61 - Millington 33

The Lady Cardinals got off to a great start on a snowy evening in Millington as the Cardinals played the Cardinals in a non-league, but Tri-Valley league match-up.  Using fine outside shooting and suffocating defense, MLS led at the quarter, 20-2.  More of the same was in store for the hosts in the second quarter as Seminary took a 36-6 lead into the half.  Millington started hitting their shots after the intermission and the Lady Cardinals lost some of their intensity and was unable to expand their halftime margin.

The Lady Cardinals traveled to St. Charles for their 3rd straight conference game on the road and came away with a 23 point victory.  St. Charles opened the game with their best quarter of the season according to their coach, but still found themselves on the short end of a 12-9 score.  MLS turned up the defensive pressure from then on and outscored the Bulldogs 28-6 in the middle two stanzas to put the game away. Although it wasn't a good shooting night for the Cardinals they still out-shot their opponents 30% to 23% and out-rebounded them 41-36

Valley Lutheran        49
MLS            41

The Lady Cardinals lost to Valley Lutheran Tuesday night.  It was their first conference loss in their last 20 games dating back to the 2005 season.  Seminary started well, hitting 5 of their first 7 shots to take an 11-10 lead after one quarter, but constant Charger pressure kept MLS from getting into their offense in the second stanza.  A 3 point buzzer beater at the half put Sem down by 11.  Seminary came out in a full court man press after the intermission to cut the lead to 2 with 8 minutes to play.  After that, missed free throws and lay-ups allowed Valley Lutheran to expand their lead.  The Lady Cardinals need to focus on winning their remaining games in order to get another shot at their local rivals the second half of the season.

MLS got back on the winning track with a convincing victory over the Cavalier's.  Carrollton came into the game undefeated in league play at 4-0 and a game ahead of the Cardinals.  Carrollton got off to a good start, hitting 3 -3-pointers and taking a 15-14 lead after 1 quarter.  After that if was all Seminary as we got out on their shooters quicker and ran good offense, repeatedly taking the ball on hard drives to the basket.  MLS outscored the Lady Cavaliers 27-13 over the middle 2 stanzas.  The "Red" also shot the ball well from the outside, finishing 25 of 53 for 47%.

Seminary showed the effects of the Christmas break by being very rusty and ineffective in their game at Merrill.  We couldn't make free throws (6-17), shots (15 of 46), and was out rebounded (37-28).  The Lady Cardinals scored only 2 points in the first quarter and 12 by half, which resulted in a 17-12 half-time deficit.  Non-the-less, on two occasions MLS either tied the score or took the lead only to see the Vandals get key offensive rebounds and put-backs to seal their win.

St. Louis January 11, 2008

St. Louis 62
MLS 58

MLS played probably their best half of the season while hosting St, Louis, but, unfortunately, followed it up with their worse half defensively.  Great defense on the Sharks pick and roll offense let to numerous steals and a 26 to 12 lead at the intermission.  St, Louis managed only 14 shots in the whole half.  After the half St. Louis slowly closed the margin and then gained all sorts of confidence.  Just about every shot that they put up, either from inside or long range, went in.  The Sharks shot 65% in the second half and was 11 of 15 in the 4th quarter.  The lady Cardinals responded with big shots of their own, but 4 missed free throws and a couple of missed 'bunnies' gave St, Louis the victory.

The Lady Cardinals got back on the winning track with a convincing victory over a very good team from up north.  Seminary jumped out to an 8 point lead each only to see the Panthers battle back to trail by one (14-13) at the quarter.  Standish's offense was based on breaking you down off the dribble and getting to the basket.  MLS shifted to a match-up defense to stop their penetration with good success in the middle two quarters.  In the 4th Standish started hitting shot from the outside to narrow the gap to 2 points.  Sem went back to their man defense and worked the ball inside for 3 straight baskets to get the lead back to 8 where it remained.

Breckenridge 25

The Lady Cardinals were clicking on all cylinders in a convincing win over visiting Breckenridge. Good defense led to some easy baskets as MLS defenders got into the passing lanes and then upped the ball for wide open lay-ups.  The game was decided in the first half as the Cardinals built a 46 to 15 lead.  Altogether Seminary had 22 steals and caused 31 Husky turnovers for the game.  For the game MLS as 29 for 62 from the field (47%) to 28% for Breckenridge (11 for 39)  The Lady Cardinals also out rebounded their opponents 32 -22.

Swan Valley    34
MLS        22
Ina West/Central Crossover game the Lady Cardinals drew an old rival, the Swan valley Vikings.  As in past years it was truly a defensive struggle for both teams.  Open shots and baskets were hard to come by.  Swan Valley led 14-13 as Seminary did an excellent job in shutting down their two 6 foot post players.  The score remained close  going into the 4th quarter when the Viking's size took over.  Their center was able to post up and also get to the offensive boards for 21 of their 34 points.  MLS did a good job of taking care of the ball - 14 turnovers to 25 for Swan Valley, but got out rebounded and was force to take most of their shots from outside.

The Lady Cardinals got back into conference play in a big was with a convincing win over the Yellowjackets of Ithaca, a team that gave them some trouble the first time around as Sem had to fight  for a 49-40 victory.  Defense was the story of the game as MLS pressure caused repeated turnovers that limited the number of shots that Ithaca got.  MLS forced 8 in the first quarter and 30 for the game.  The result was that the Yellowjackets only got up 10 shots in the first half and found themselves down 24-5.  More of the same followed in the third quarter as Seminary put the game away with 13 points to just 2 for the visitors.  MLS also out rebounded Ithaca 38-17 for the game.

MLS 47
Vassar 24
The Lady Cardinals continued their string of fine defensive games in a victory over the Vulcan's of Vassar.  The saying that "Defense wins games" was never more true than Thursday night.  Both Sem and Vassar are good defensive teams.  Coupled with poor shooting the defense allowed MLS to have a lead in spite of hitting only 3 of 20 shots in the first half.  Sem led 4-1 at the first quarter break (allowing Vassar only 2 shot attempts) and 14-4 at the half.  They 4 points allowed were a team record for a half.  The Cardinals started hitting their shots after the intermission and led by 30 at one point before the Vulcan's made a late run.  MLS forced Vassar into 41 turnovers for the game.

Gladwin January 29, 2008

MLS 59
Gladwin 27

Once again Seminary's lock down man-to-man half court defense was the key to victory.  During the second half of the season the whole team is playing so well together, helping out when needed and reacting to different situations as they developed on the floor.  The Flying 'G's of Gladwin are a young, but athletic team that played pretty good defense, but were no match for the talented Cardinals who gave up only 1 basket in each of the first 3 quarters. Quick hands and good positioning led to 16 Cardinals steals and, as a result, easy baskets in transition.  As a result, MLS had an 18 - 1 lead after one and a 31 - 8 led at the intermission. Good offensive rebounding and cutting down on turnovers led to the Lady Cardinals getting 59 shots to just 25 for Gladwin.

Valley Lutheran February 5, 2008

Valley Lutheran 51
MLS    48

The games between Valley Lutheran And MLS are becoming a rivalry.  The Lady Cardinals were pointing to this game ever since a home loss to the Chargers in December.  Both teams played well, taking care of the ball and playing good defense which limited the number of open shots.  Unfortunately, a poor second quarter doomed Seminary.  MLS won or tied in three of the quarters but lost the second by 10.  Foul trouble plagued both teams, but Valley, with a deeper bench that night, prevailed.  In the second half Sem kept eating away at Valley's lead and got it to 2 late into the fourth only to see the Chargers make their free throws down the stretch.

Seminary and Carrollton locked up in a intense game Friday night.  Both teams played very good half-court defense and open shots were at a minimum.  The Lady Cavalier's jumped out to a 13-6 first quarter lead that Sem had trouble closing until just before the half.  Carrollton still led 21-20 at the break and maintained it 27-26 as both teams scored only 6 points in the third.  MLS was able to hit some key shots early in the fourth and once they got the lead, never relinquished it.  Foul trouble hurt the Cavaliers down the stretch, but also Sem was able to stop their point guard from penetrating.  While not shooting free throws very well, (6 for 14 in the last quarter) we made just enough to keep Carrollton at bay.

The Lady Cardinals dominated their home game in every aspect except the score in a make-up game on Monday night.  Even though the Bulldogs had a height advantage Sem controlled the boards, getting 15 offensive boards to St, Charles's 4 and committed only 10 turnovers to the visitor's 25.  This resulted in Seminary getting up 56 shots to St, Charles's 30.  The trouble was that MLS had its worst shooting night of the season, shooting only 21%. (12 for 56)  Even though the Cardinals were never threatened, a couple of late baskets by the Bulldogs made the score close.

By beating Merrill at home Seminary avenged an earlier defeat to the Vandals.  Sem got off to a good start both offensively and defensively, jumping out to a 13 -4 1st quarter lead that was expanded to 21 - 8 at the half.  Half-court defense keyed the way.  In the second half the Lady Cardinals bumped the lead to 15 points until  a couple of late Merrill baskets cut into that margin.  As opposed to their last couple of games the Cardinals did not do a good job on the boards or taking care of the ball.  It was a good thing that we shot well (42% for the game) because the Vandals got up 15 more  shots than we did.  Both teams played good defense.  The game was won in the first half, again with MLS limiting an opponent to less than 10 points.

St. Louis February 15, 2008

MLS        54
St. Louis    41

The Lady Cardinals ended their regular season with a convincing win over the Sharks of St,. Louis to end their regular season at 14-6.  Both teams played good defense.  The Sharks, however, were determined not to let Seminary get an easy basket and repeatedly fouled the Cardinals on their drives to the basket.  Sem went to the line 32 times and made 20, compared to only 4 for 7 for St, Louis.  Sem cut down on their turnovers for the game which was a good sign leading into the district tournament.  The Cardinals drew Beal City (17-3) in the first round.

Beal City February 20, 2008

District game

MLS 46
Beal City 37

MLS won its first district game against a very good Beal City team that came into the game at 17-3.  After a first quarter that see-sawed back and forth and ended in a 9-89 tie. Beal City Scored the first 4 points of the 2nd.  The Lady Cardinals then went on a 13-4 run that resulted in a 5 point lead at the half.  Giving MLS a lift as they headed into the locker room was a buzzer-beating 3 pointer by Amanda Gardner.  At the end of the 3rd quarter she did it again, but this time at the foul line.  Amanda was fouled at the buzzer on a 3 point shot and made all three.  Sem gradually opened a 14 point lead in the 4th and a couple of late Beal City baskets made no difference.

Mt Pleasant Sacred Heart February 22, 2008

Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart    53
MLS                32

The Lady Cardinal's season came to an abrupt end in the district finals against Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart.  Unfortunately, Seminary got off to a bad start against their bigger opponents who showed a lot of poise.  Facing a 21-2 deficit at the end of the first quarter forced Sem to bear down and execute better.  Playing them even up over the last 3 quarters didn't get the job done.  The Cardinals rebounded the same and had the same number of shots and turnovers.  The difference was that Sacred Heart was 19 for 37 from the field while MLS was 13 for 38.  Mt. Pleasant also had the advantage at the free throw line by going 15 - 20 to 6  - 12 for Seminary.  The Cardinals finished the year at 15-7.
