Attendance

Class attendance is expected!

A written excuse from a parent is to be submitted to the attendance secretary on the day a student returns from an absence at home. Excuses for visits involving a doctor should be accompanied by a slip from the doctor's office. For dorm students ill at school, excuses are submitted by the dormitory staff. Students who are absent from any portion of the academic day because of illness may not participate in extracurricular activities on that day. Rare exceptions to this policy may be granted by the administration at the request of an advisor, coach, or director. Sick students are expected to be at home or in their dorm room recovering. Commuting students who wish to leave school early because of illness are to notify the administration office or IDO before leaving campus.

We have noticed significant academic and social decline in students who are absent from class. This is not surprising! Still we get occasional last-minute requests for absence from some parents and guardians. Please observe the following guidelines:

Some reasons for missing class are acceptable. They include

  1. Taste of Ministry
  2. unavoidable medical or dental appointment
  3. illness
  4. death in the family
  5. emergency

Some reasons for missing class are not acceptable. They include

  1. vacation while everyone else is in school
  2. avoidable medical or dental appointment
  3. leaving early for vacation
  4. sleeping in
  5. coming back late from vacation

When a short, non-emergency, planned absence must be arranged

  1. notify Professor Carl Weihrauch (cjw@mlsem.org) in writing at least two weeks in advance
    1. Students will be excused for illness, medical appointments, family/friend funerals, family weddings, and MLC visits. Others cases may be considered on   an individual basis.
    2. For other planned absences, students must attend one Period 10 for every four class periods missed.
    3. Classes that would not require Period 10 would be choir, band, and PE.
  2. If a student in good academic standing wants to hunt on the opening day of deer hunting season,
  3. request a planned absence for that day by going through the steps above, and
  4. request an extra day if you want to and your GPA is B- or better.
  5. If a student under your supervision misses school, please
  6. call the morning that you keep the student home, and
  7. then send a written excuse when your student returns to school. Excuses for medical reasons must include a slip signed by the doctor.

Period Ten

Three cycle days from the time of absence are given to a student to make up work placed in the Period Ten file by a teacher unless the teacher specifies a different time. Blue slip reminders are sent out after that time. For long absences, a school secretary will set deadlines for make-up work that take a student's schedule into consideration. Deadlines for completing missed work are posted daily before Fifth Period. Make-up work may be completed every school day between 3:15 and 4:00 p.m. in the computer room (Friday afternoons in the administration office). Students may use free periods during the day to do make-up work in the library. Unfinished long-range assignments incur a late penalty of one-third of a grade per day for the first three days late. Thereafter a student's grade is frozen and attendance after school at a place designated by the teacher is mandatory until the late work is completed.
