Project Titus, Korea
This trip to Korea was a great experience for all of us. It was awesome to go half way around the world and see that we had brothers and sisters in Christ that believed the exact same thing that we do. While this trip had some difficult parts to it, it was also very fun and rewarding.
First of all was the plane ride over there. It was 13 hours long, but was not as bad as it sounds. They gave us meals, and we were able to watch movies and play games. It was, however, a relief to finally get onto solid ground when we got there.
We spent the first weekend there with our host families and went sight seeing. We went to a really neat outdoor market that had things that were different from the things in America.
That night we went to a movie with some of the Korean students from MLS. On Sunday, we went to church and the service was very different from ours. There was more singing, and hand holding than what we have.
On Monday, we met our English students. These kids came from hours away by themselves to learn English and hear God’s Word. There were many different ages and English abilities. We divided the kids into age groups, and we ended up with the 5th graders. On Tuesday we took the kids on buses to the Olympic Pool to go swimming. That was a lot of fun and the kids really enjoyed getting thrown around.
We had long, 9 hour days with the kids, and it was sometimes difficult to teach them, because there was a sort of language barrier between us, but it was really cool to see them getting better at English and growing in God’s Word. After the students left everyday, we usually ate dinner there, then went back to the motel where we were staying at.
At the end of the week we were exhausted from all the hard work. We had become close to these kids in such a short time, and it was sad to see them leave for the last time. We, the teachers, probably learned just as much from these kids as they had learned from us, if not more.
They tested our patience, showed us what it is to be a teacher, and also the rewards that come with it.
While it was nice to come home and see our families again it was also bittersweet because we had to leave all the friends we had made in that short week in Korea. We thank MLS, Mrs. Kock, Pastor Brassow, and the East Seoul Canaan Church for giving us this opportunity. Its probably safe to say that we would all like to go again if given the chance.
Yours in Christ,
Caitlyn Eurich and Matt Gullick
