James Frohmader Memorial Scholarship (Pastor)
In memory of James R. Frohmader, who graduated from MLS in 1977 and was enrolled at Northwestern College, but was killed as the result of an accident at the state track meet. Given to the top student who intends to continue training for the preaching ministry.

In memory of James R. Frohmader, who graduated from MLS in 1977 and was enrolled at Northwestern College, but was killed as the result of an accident at the state track meet. Given to the top student who intends to continue training for the teaching ministry.

Eric Zimmerman Memorial Grant
In memory of Eric J. Zimmerman, who graduated from MLS in 1978 and continued his training for the preaching ministry at Northwestern College and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. Eric died while a student at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. Given to a student who intends to continue training for the preaching ministry.

JoJo Behrens Memorial Grant (not currently part of graduation ceremony)
In memory of Joanna L. Behrens, who graduated from MLS in 1992, attended Dr. Martin Luther College, and began teaching in Downers Grove, IL, where she was struck by a sudden illness and died in 1998. Given by JoJo’s classmates to a senior chosen by the other seniors as being the most encouraging to all the other classmates.

Arthur G. Wacker Memorial Grant
In memory of Pastor Arthur G. Wacker, who graduated from Michigan Lutheran Seminary on June 15, 1915, and served as pastor of Salem, Ann Arbor, from 1936 to 1962. Pastor Wacker was one of two men who made our synod=s first mission trip to Africa in 1949. Given to two students who intend to continue training for the preaching ministry.

Gerhard Clabusch Memorial Grant
In memory of Gerhard C. Clabusch, who graduated from MLS in 1924 and whose home was on the property where the maintenance shop now stands. Through the kindness of his daughter, Mrs. Doris Goodeman (a 1949 graduate of MLS), this grant is given to a student who intends to continue training for either the preaching or the teaching ministry.


Former Presidents of MLS - Memorial Scholarships


OJR Hoenecke Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Otto J.R. Hoenecke, first director (president) of Michigan Lutheran Seminary when it reopened as a preparatory school in 1910. Director Hoenecke was president until 1950 and taught for another decade before his retirement. Given to the student with the second highest GPA who intends to continue training for either the preaching or the teaching ministry.

Conrad I. Frey Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Conrad I. Frey, second president of Michigan Lutheran Seminary (1950-1966). President emeritus Frey passed away in October 1998. He also served as president of Dr. Martin Luther College. Given to the student with the third highest GPA who intends to continue training for either the preaching or the teaching ministry.

Martin R. Toepel Memorial Scholarship
In memory of Martin R. Toepel, third president of Michigan Lutheran Seminary (1966-1978). President Toepel taught at MLS from 1945-1978. Given to the student with the fourth highest GPA who intends to continue training for either the preaching or the teaching ministry.


Professors Who Served at MLS - Memorial Grants


Adolf H. Sauer Memorial Grant
In memory of Adolf H. Sauer, science and religion professor at MLS from 1911 to 1946. Given to a student who intends to continue training for either the preaching or the teaching ministry.

Lloyd and Edith Thompson Grant
In honor of Coach Lloyd E. Thompson and his wife, Edith M. Thompson, who taught at MLS 1952-1968, and who also served at Milwaukee Lutheran Teachers College and at Northwestern College. Fund established by the Thompson children, friends and former colleagues on the occasion of Lloyd's 80th birthday January 23, 1997). Given to a student who intends to continue training for the preaching ministry, with special consideration given to minority and international students.

Emil E. Kasischke Distinguished Teacher Memorial Grant
In the name of Emil E. Kasischke, pastor at Trinity, Bay City, MI, and chairman of the MLS Board of Control from 1951 to 1976. In memory of a different faculty member each year, names drawn in rotation from the list of faculty members who retired while a professor at MLS and have died. Given to a student who intends to continue training for the teaching ministry.


Staff Members Who Served At MLS - Grants


Robert Kaschinske Distinguished Service Awards
Given each year to one male senior and one female senior who demonstrated selfless service during their four years at MLS. In memory of Robert “Uncle Rope” Kaschinske, who served selflessly for many years as business manager, janitor, custodian, cafeteria worker, and in many other roles.

Aunt Jane Grant
In honor of Jane Larson, housemother at MLS from 1973 to 1993. Given to a female student who intends to continue training for the teaching ministry.


Organizations Sponsoring Grants


MLS Booster Club Grants
Given to students who intend to continue training for the preaching and teaching ministry and who apply. Donations come from the Booster Club accounts.

MLS Guild Grants
Given to students who intend to continue training for the preaching and teaching ministry and who apply. Donations come from the Guild accounts.

Cantate Deo Grants
Given to students who intend to continue training for the preaching and teaching ministry and who intend to continue developing their musical gifts for use in the ministry. Donations come from the Saginaw Valley Lutheran Chorale.

Incentive for the Ministry Grants
Given to students who intend to continue training for the preaching and teaching ministry and who apply. Donations come from individuals without designation and from MLS funds invested for this purpose, particularly Kloha funds.
